Katharina Rein

Dr. phil. Katharina Rein currently works as a Lecturer in European Media Studies at the University of Potsdam. Previously, she was Visiting Professor at the University of Vienna, and worked as a Researcher at the International Research Institute for Cultural Techniques and Media Philosophy of the Bauhaus University, Weimar. Katharina received her PhD in Cultural History and Theory from Humboldt-University Berlin. Her award-winning dissertation on stage magic in the late nineteenth century was published as a book in German in 2020 and in English in 2023. She is also the author of two books on Gothic and horror film: Gothic Cinema (2021, English version: 2023) and Gestörter Film (2012). Katharina also edited two collections of academic essays on magic and illusions: Illusions in Cultural Practice (2021) and Magic. A Companion (2022). She wrote over 25 academic essays that have appeared in four different languages. She serves as a peer-reviewer for renowned international journals such as Early Popular Visual Culture and The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies, and is regularly consulted as an expert by the media: She appeared on the BBC, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, and various podcasts, and was quoted in German and Austrian newspapers.
